The Engineering Manager will lead a cross-functional engineering team to drive infrastructure modernisation for In-Store Selling and Stores, overseeing the transition from legacy systems tostrategic platforms. This role is pivotal in ensuring operational stability during peak trading periods, addressing legacy technology risks, and delivering a future-ready, cyber-resilient architecture aligned with business growth and compliance requirements. The role will work closely with architects and product to define the strategy, shape the platform roadmap and improve/upgrade/replace existing hardware/software solutions.
This is an initial six month contract and will sit outside IR35. You will be required onsite in London Paddington 3 days a week.
Your key accountabilities will include:
• Strong experience managing platform, infrastructure and SRE capabilities in cloud/on-prem environments
• Lead and mentor a team of engineers fostering a culture of accountability and ownership, high-performance, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
• Maintain operational stability during critical trading periods and manage incident response improvements.
• Drive technical stabilisation of unsupported systems through interim upgrades and containment strategies, including migration planning from legacy platforms (e.g. Windows Server 2003/2008) to supported environments.)
• Shape and execute a roadmap for flexible, modular, and cyber-resilient infrastructure, best practices including zero-trust or automated recovery.
• Ensure knowledge sharing and autonomy through clear processes including recovery playbooks, tech debt management and documented.
• Work closely with business stakeholders and cross-functional Technical Program Managers, Solution Architects, and Environment Managers to align initiatives, balance outcomes.
Your skills and experience will include:
• Proven experience managing engineering individuals and teams in large-scale infrastructure environments.
• Strong technical background in enterprise infrastructure both on-premises and cloud platform (e.g. Windows Server, networking, cloud platforms).
• Expertise in modernisation strategies including Software defined Wide Area Networks (SD-WAN), Azure Virtualisation Desktop, and cloud-hybrid native architectures.
• Familiarity with observability practices and tools (Dynatrace, SCOM) and security frameworks (Zero Trust, encryption).
• Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
• Ability to operate in high-pressure environments and deliver stability during peak operational periods.

• Knowledge of retail infrastructure and store systems (POS, tills, workstations)
• Exposure to governance frameworks and KPI-driven performance management (MTTD, MTTR, patch compliance)
